JULIA GUARINO |
Mom. Auntie. Animal lover. Yogi. Outdoor adventurer. Likes: Novels. The ocean. Laughing too loud. Sunset hikes. Leisurely dinners. Spending time with kids. Dislikes: Being inside when it’s sunny out. Getting up too early on the weekend. Fast food. People cutting in line. Julia grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Bard College in upstate New York in 2007. In 2009, she moved to Billings, Montana, where she served as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the City of Billings, working on the city’s 10-year plan to end homelessness. She enrolled in law school in 2010, graduating from University of Colorado Law School in 2013 with a J.D. and certificate in American Indian Law. Since law school, her work has focused on the intersection between environmental protection and cultural preservation, largely in tribal communities. She has also served as a board member for the Navajo Nation Bar Association, New Mexico Legal Aid, and her neighborhood association. Julia met her husband, Casey, in 2018 in Durango, Colorado. A few months later, he bravely moved with her to Taos, New Mexico, where they bought a house together and got married in their backyard in the depths of the COVID pandemic. In 2022, they moved to Port Angeles, Washington so Julia could work as an in-house attorney for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Julia and Casey lost their first daughter, Sora, to a rare birth defect in November 2023. They were looking for a meaningful way to volunteer with kids as they grieved when they found Olympic Angels. They joined a Love Box in January 2024 and fell in love with the organization and its mission – not to mention the wonderful foster kids they are supporting! They were so very lucky to welcome their second daughter, Juniper, into their family in December 2024. Julia is thrilled to serve as an advisor to the board and to bring her nerdy fascination with organizational governance to the work. |
