Our Impact

Relationships Change Everything.

This is the measurable progress toward our 2050 vision.

In many places, challenges like homelessness, health crises, and justice system involvement can feel distant - but here on the North Olympic Peninsula, they are visible every day.

We see them on our streets, in our emergency rooms, and in the systems so many are trying to navigate. What we are often witnessing are not isolated circumstances, but the long-term effects of early instability - experiences that begin in childhood, including time spent in foster care.

At Olympic Angels, we are working to change that trajectory - not only by surrounding youth with consistent, caring relationships, but by fostering greater awareness of how early experiences can shape lifelong outcomes.

Pages of Perspective is a community-wide reading initiative designed to change how we understand foster care in our own neighborhoods. Through Seattle Times author Claudia Rowe’s powerful book, Wards of the State: The Long Shadow of American Foster Care, we hope to spark meaningful conversations, deepen understanding, and inspire action.

Beginning June 10th, hundreds of free books will be available throughout Clallam and Jefferson counties, giving neighbors across the North Olympic Peninsula the opportunity to read, reflect, and engage together. Visit the Pick Up Locations section to find a participating location.

Then, on August 8, 2026, from 10:00–11:30 a.m., the community will gather at the Elks Ballroom in Sequim for a special morning with author Claudia Rowe and speakers with lived experience. Through honest conversation and personal stories, attendees will explore the realities behind the headlines and celebrate the resilience that emerges when people are seen, heard, and supported. No prior reading is required, and everyone is welcome. Additional event details can be found below.

Pages of Perspective is more than a community read - it is a movement toward a more compassionate, informed community. Join us as we read, reflect, and reshape what is possible for children and families in our region.

Overview

  • We believe understanding is the first step toward change. Foster care is not an abstract issue; it unfolds in real people’s lives, right here in our community. Pages of Perspective invites us all to step into that story. Inspired by Claudia Rowe’s Wards of the State: The Long Shadow of American Foster Care, a deeply reported exploration of foster care, we see how early trauma often leads to lifelong struggles – homelessness, incarceration, and health crises. Through the intimate stories of six young people, Rowe reveals how a $30 billion foster system can fail those it is meant to protect. This book is crucial because it exposes the systemic flaws and, more importantly, the real, human cost behind them. Pages of Perspective invites us not just to read, but to respond – with empathy, action, and a commitment to a more just future.

  • Pages of Perspective is a grassroots community read that spreads awareness across the North Olympic Peninsula. We are distributing hundreds of copies of Wards of the State: The Long Shadow of American Foster Care at multiple pickup locations throughout the region. The pickups are projected for May, and once we finalize the locations, we’ll announce them so you can find the one nearest to you.

Here’s how you can get involved: simply pick up a book, read it, and pass it along to your neighbors, friends, and family. Each reader becomes a bridge – sharing the story and sparking conversations that keep the momentum going.

After we’ve all had a chance to reflect, we’ll come together in August for an author talk and panel discussion – a chance to engage with those closest to the system, share insights, and deepen our collective understanding. This is how we turn a book into a movement - one person, one conversation, one ripple at a time.

  • This is not just about reading a book.

    It is about shifting perspective.
It is about seeing what has always been here.
It is about building a community that understands before it judges – and responds before it reacts.

Because when awareness grows, outcomes can change.

When this mentorship began last year, it was as though it had been a long time since anyone truly looked her in the eye and reflected her worth back to her. After years out of school and struggling with social anxiety, she stayed mostly hidden – until she chose to re-enroll, secure her first job, and begin advocating for herself.

Her mentor didn’t fix things – she simply walked beside her. Together, they met with teachers, studied at the kitchen table, and explored the world – one movie, one shop, one dance step at a time. And that shift – feeling comfortable in social spaces – is profound for someone who once felt safest staying hidden.

What she hoped for in a mentor wasn’t a hero, but someone steady – someone who could walk with her, try new things, and reflect her potential back. This is what mentorship at Olympic Angels is – grounded, intentional, and life-changing.
